What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that effects about one percent of the worlds population.

Though these are the most common symptoms for schizophrenia people can also experience things such as withdrawal, very fearful of others, sit for hours without taling or moving. They may appear to be talking with themselves and they may find it difficult to hold a job or to take care of themselves.

Who Does This Effect

The thing about schizophrenia is that it is not found a specific race or gender. It affects everyone. Signs of schizophrenia usually start showing between the ages of 16 - 30. It is very rare to see a child with schizophrenia. You won't usually see it in people under 12 or older then 40. In teenagers though it can be very difficult to diagnose. Sometimes early signs of schizophrenia can be percieved as the normal typical teenage behavior like irritability or sleep problems. Though there are factors that can predict it in 80% of youth who are more at risk in developing schizophrenia.

Treatments

There are a few treatments that can help a person with schizophrenia get a better handle on it but there is no cure for schizoprhenia. Treatments may include:

Antipsychotic Medications

It is good to talk to your doctor about these medications and talk about about which one is right for you. Though some of these medications may have sides effects like weight gain, muscle spasms, or drowsiness. That is why also talk to a doctor about your options.

Psychosocial Treatment

These treatments help the individual deal with everyday challenges such as work or communication and relationships with other people once the person is stabilized.

Rehabilitation

These programs help individual with schizophrenia to participate in there communities and help them with their career skills to help them get back on track since this can put a persons career on hold.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This treatment helps the individual by changing any patterns of unhelpful thinking and behavior. Exercises that test the persons thoughts and perceptions. How to not listen to the voices and to how to manage their symptoms overall.

Today experts are still developing new ways to help people with schizophrenia. Also if you have schizophrenia you can still lead a normal life. Just like many others who have under gone the treatments. It is not the end for you.
